This is to augment my earlier post, which was just part of this post. This one gives the rest of the story, more details. It is a conversation between two Ron Paul supporters.

I hope someone will put this on the front page so it doesn’t get lost.

I know many of you are bummed about yesterday BUT THAT IS BECAUSE YOU DO NOT UNDERSTAND HOW THE ELECTION SYSTEM WORKS : Let me explain to you the reality of how to become the nominee.

First stop looking at who wins each states popular vote for most of these states the vote by the people is really nothing but a straw poll and have no real bearing on who will become the nominee. The only way this matters is if 1 person receives 1192 delegates that are bound by state rules to be commited to that candidate. NOW there is no possible way that anyone in the race can achieve this goal now because of the major split in state wins by the candidates.

So what happens now you ask? You look at the number of delegates that Dr. Paul has that are uncommited to the other candidates and will support him. these delegates are not decided by the popular vote ie: straw poll of the people. Since no one will have enough delegates to skate them through to the nomination we now must look at how many delegates NOT VOTES but delegates Dr. Paul has that are 100% uncommited to the other candidates and will be 100% for Dr. Paul and are free to vote for whom they wish.

This race will go all the way to the convention for there is no other way for someone to receive the nomintaion untill the convention.

The RNC will convene its annual Winter Meeting - and voters will continue to cast their ballots in the nation’s primaries and caucuses. Candidates for delegate and alternate delegate to the convention will be elected - and thousands of convention participants and guests will begin planning their trips to Minneapolis-Saint Paul The first week in September 2008

SO WHAT DOES ALL THIS MEAN?

This means that all of the people that registered to become a deligate for Dr. Paul can go to the convention and cast thier vote for Dr. Paul, now think about what i just said : Do you think for one second that all the people that voted for Dr. Paul and filed to become a deligate will not show up at the convention to vote for the good Doctor? Of course they will just like they battled the rain and the sleet and the 15 below zero winter weather to knock on doors and wave signs spreading our message.

Now i assure you that even though we didn’t win the popular vote in many states WE DID PICK UP THE MAJORITY OF DELEGATES THAN ALL THE OTHER CANDIDATES IN MOST EVERY STATE EXCEPT A FEW. So yes they won the straw poll and we won what counts which is delegates.

Doesn’t Dr. Paul need to WIN 5 states to be on the ballot at the convention for the nomination?

NO THIS IS NOT TRUE for people were just confused on how it actually works.

We only need the majority of delegates from 5 states to be put on the ballot NOT THE POPULAR VOTE OF 5 STATES and i assure you we have picked up the majority of uncommitted delegates for Dr. Paul in more than 5 states.

Do any of you remember seeing posts by myself and many others that said BECOME A DELEGATE? There is still time in most states to become a delegate for the convention and we are picking up more of them every day.

So please STOP you worry too much because you do not understand how the election system works and you thought we lost didn’t you?

The fact is Dr. Paul is a genius in his strategy and we are further ahead in delegates than you think and we can win the nomination.

I hope this gives a better understanding of how we have been winning even though most of you thought we were not.

This all sounds great on paper, but with no disrespect intended, this motivational speech is filled with some rather baseless assumptions.

For one thing, many states do have bound delegates (required to vote in accordance with the popular vote in their congressional district). The assumption seems to be that the majority of delegates at the convention will be unbound. If this is the case, a breakdown of bound vs. unbound would certainly have helped make your case. Bound delegates are not going to do our cause much good, as Dr. Paul has won very few. But beyond this, there is no reason to assume that the delegates who have the freedom to vote for whomever they wish are going to support Dr. Paul. There are feverishly enthusiastic people supporting McCain, Romney and Huckabee, as well, and these supporters doubtless applied to be delegates, as well.

If there is some evidence that the majority of delegates are completely out of sync with the voters of their state and that most of them are secretly planning to vote for Dr. Paul, please share your evidence of this, as it would be a boon to the campaign in therms of volunteers and cash. Or perhaps there is some proof somewhere that there are (and will be) more delegate applicants supporting the good doctor than those supporting any other candidate, that all or most of these have made it past the GOP screening process, have been elected as a delegates and plan a secret coup in September.

I would love nothing more than to see Dr. Paul sworn into the office of President. I have tried to wrap my mind around countless scenarios that might allow that to happen. And while I am not giving up on this campaign, the best realistic hope at this point is for a brokered convention where our man cannot be ignored; where a reasoned voice for liberty can perhaps change some hearts and minds and wake some delegates to the reality that only Ron Paul can defeat the Democratic nominee. Winning in this way is the only real possibility. And while there will there might be a few delegates planning to genuinely support Ron Paul at convention, and a few protest votes falling our way, it requires a myopic and a frankly naive view of the situation to think we are going surprise everyone with delegates who planned to support Dr. Paul from the beginning.

We all seem to agree that the media has been treated the campaign horribly, closely guarding their fable that the Democrats and Republicans are oh-so-opposite. How much tighter must the GOP guard the status quo of “neocon “big government conservatism?” It is apparent to me that the good ole’ boy network will take care of their own, selecting delegates with a proven history of supporting more of the same, or just outright voting as they are told. Those with political aspirations of their own often do the bidding of their Party’s masters in exchange for future help. This is grim, sad and unmotivational, i know. But the truth is often ugly.

…and here’s the most important point: delegates talk to each other. I have friends who met each other as delegates together at the republican convention in 1964, and are STILL friends to this day! (including my humble self). They say its like serving together in combat (the 1964 convention, where we tossed out Rockefeller and nominated Goldwater, certainly was… and you think THIS convention will be any LESS contentious??). Can you think of any Ron Paul delegates who won’t bring their laptops with them? Can you imagine how many copies of “Zeitgeist” and “Freedom to Fascism” will be playing at night in those delegates’ hotel rooms in Minneapolis? (or between now and then at the delegates’ homes?).

I have also seen evidence that in many states, we got at least THREE TIMES the number of delegates that the popular vote would indicate. Nevada and Louisiana are two of them, of course, but I have seen reports on at least one eastern seaboard state, plus Montana (I’ll have to go chase down the exact details). All we need are enough delegates to sow seeds of doubt—and we’ve got ‘em!

Have you ever met anybody you couldn’t convince of the truth when you could sit them down and show them the evidence? The only people you absolutely can’t convince are actual members of the NWO… and they can’t pack the convention with that many such agents— because they don’t have that many!!

Sorry if I sound delirious, but I’m even more excited about this convention than I was for the 1964 one… and I would have sworn on a stack of bibles last year that such was impossible.

Rex,

Thanks for the reply. As to “each and every single one of those “bound” delegates…” You may want to check on that. Florida delegates, for example are bound on the first two votes. I honestly don’t know if this is a new requirement this time around, or not. But if so, other states have now require the same.

I certainly hope McCain doesn’t have the delegates and it is a brokered convention. But I still worried that whether delegates talk or not, there are going to be a huge number of bought-and-paid for votes. Can we hope to have more than a few delegates who truly support our candidate? And will these people really be able to convince many others who knew who they were voting for before they ever got on the plane? I don’t know. The possibility is very exciting, but my optimism is very cautious.

The good news–as I see it–is that the average delegate, whether first timer or lifer, is certain to have their finger on the political pulse. As a result, the media blackout of our man will obviously not be a factor. I think the real hope for changing minds at the convention is the obvious (to us) truth that only Dr. Paul can defeat the Democratic nominee. Still, convincing hundreds and hundreds of people not only of this fact, but to vote with us, is going to be awfully tough. Thoughts?

Dear Darin (and everybody else, of course),

You are, of course, absolutely correct with the points you have raised, which only underscores our need to get to work on this NOW.

Everyone in this group except me lives in Florida, so the marching orders are obvious: find the location and time of the state nominating convention. Attend if possible. If not possible, stay in a hotel close by. Find out who the delegates are when they are chosen. Send our best salesmen to talk with them before the national convention (we actually sink low enough to accept lawyers in this movement, so we must have plenty of salesmen!). C’mon, folks, its only 57 people—we outnumber them by better than 1,000 to 1! (1,000 X 57 is 57,000, and more than 60,000 people voted for Ron Paul in FL!).

At several conventions, all of the “bound” delegates have been considered still bound for the first several votes, since, by some quirk in the rules, all such initial votes being considered the first “round” of balloting. I frankly admit that I don’t understand these rules, but I don’t have to, as I’m sure our fearless leader does! (I have always used that “RockyandBullwinkleesque” title ironically, and now, for the first time in my entire life, I mean it as the heartfelt, literal truth).

My optimism is cautious as well, but beneath that caution is a swirling roar of emotion, gaining strength with every hour. Ever since I first saw it, I have been moved to tears by Frank Capra’s fantasy Mister Smith Goes to Washington. Well, we’re doing better than they did in that movie: we’re sending an older, wiser, tougher Smith back to Washington, with more than 20 years of experience under his belt… AND WE’RE DOING IT FOR REAL!!

Now I’ve made myself cry again.
